How to Live in the Present

How to Live in the Present

Living in the present can be hard, especially when you feel like you always have to be so focused on the future yet somehow at the same time you feel held back by your past. That’s why, before your mind is completely torn in two from the stress, we ask you to just take a brief moment, and a slow breath, and focus all your attention on these five tips we have for you on how to live more in the present – even if just for a moment.

Meditate

For those who don’t know what true meditation is it may just seem like a waste of time, but real meditation is more than just sitting there quietly. Similar to the common grounding exercises used by people with anxiety, meditation is merely a way to re-center and refocus oneself to enhance productivity. All too often, people get too distracted by their devices, and the constant influx of information begins to make everything in the world seem faster, making you feel constantly behind. The truth, however, is that the flow of time hasn’t changed at all, only your perception of it. Therefore, taking a bit of time each day to meditate and focus on all the small things happening around you in real time can greatly help you recognize what you need to do to avoid more distractions and focus better to accomplish your daily goals.

Work Toward Your Better Future Today

It’s all too easy to say “someday,” or “I’ll start when,” when talking about your dreams and aspirations. However, like the saying says, “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans,” meaning everyday you’re worried about what you’re going to do when you accomplish your goals is another day wasted not striving toward them. So, instead of worrying about where you’re going to live once you get your dream job, or how you’re going to afford to take that internship, put everything you have into achieving your dream – then worry about how to make it work later. Whatever it is, you/life will find a way to ensure it all works out; you just need to spend all your time focusing on making those dreams come true!

Let Things Go

Whether it’s someone trying to tear you down, or past accomplishments you’re proud of, if it’s in the past let it go. You should always strive to be 100% focused on what you’re doing right now to better your future. Don’t get caught up in bragging about last weeks project, or absorbed in what your co-worker said about you in the bathroom – all it does is take your time and mental focus away from the amazing things you could be accomplishing right now. So, anytime you feel your mind beginning to wander, give yourself a gentle reminder that if it’s not directly related to your happiness or future success, it doesn’t deserve your time!

Admit You Have No Real Control

Things happen, good and bad, and most of the time you can’t control it. Kids get sick, accidents leave you stranded, you land a better job in another city, and there’s nothing you can do about it. The point is, plans get ruined, therefore planning too much never works. So, if you really want to be happy and live in the present, you need to finally admit to yourself that you can’t control everything. Don’t let one unexpected occurrence ruin your entire day/night or having you in a panic. Adjust, be flexible, go with the flow. Appreciate every individual moment as it passes and ride out any challenge that comes your way. It may take a bit of work, and a lot of will, but it is possible.

Smile More

It may seem silly, but making an effort to smile more can go a long way in improving your quality of life – although, you shouldn’t walk around with a fake smile all the time. It’s more about taking a better look at your life (in the present moment) to find little things that make you smile. Instead of getting sucked into work and distracted by your stress, try to take a look around more, find something, anything at all, that brings you even a little joy. Let that feeling of joy be your escape. Before you know it, your mind will be searching for things to smile about without even trying!
