Being mindful is a scientifically backed method of acquiring true inner peace and lasting happiness through comprehensive reflection and conscious efforts toward emotional stability, but it’s also a habit that every person must make for themselves in their own lives. It is not about putting away things like stress, anxiety, grief, or any other negative emotions, it’s about allowing yourself to feel, acknowledge, accept, and release anything and everything that comes your way. Contrary to what many people might believe, practicing mindfulness and meditation can be easy for anyone of any age, so long as you’re committed to putting in the work. By practicing being mindful you can learn how to better cope with mental, emotional, and physical pain, reduce stress in your life, connect with and focus better on the things and people you care most about, and so much more. With the help a few tips on how to be mindful and meditate properly, even you can successfully reprogram your brain with mindfulness.
The first step is learning how to properly meditate so that you can observe the present moment how it is and get into a state of mind where you can let go of the doubts and judgments you feel. Find a comfortable place and sit up straight. Don’t worry about where to put your arms, hands, or feet, just let them relax wherever they are comfortable. Try your best to focus on your breathing, relaxing your eyes or closing them if that is what you wish. The most important thing is to not fight your thoughts, but rather let them pass by you. Pay close attention to how your body feels. Do your legs get tingly when you take a deep breath? Can you feel a breeze on your arm from a window or vent? Listen to the sounds around you, the dog barking across the street or the cars on the road. Feel how still and calm you are while the world moves on around you, in the same way you should let your thoughts move freely around you until you feel calm and relaxed enough to stop. Meditation is a great way to start off your morning, help you get to sleep at night, or even calm you down if you’re having a particularly stressful day. You can choose to meditate for only a few minutes if that’s the longest you can sit still, or several hours for intense relaxation and healing. Whatever you need, whenever and wherever you need it.
The most important things to remember is that mindfulness is a choice, and it’s something that you must be determined to practice every single day. Mindfulness is not a way to fix you or a cure all for unhappiness and suffering, you are not broken and pain is a natural part of life that everyone around you experiences. It is not about stopping you from having negative thoughts, escaping life and reality, religious practice, or even changing who you are. It is about how to get a healthier perspective, by forming new pathways in the brain, reshaping your thoughts about the things that currently overwhelm you, and how to have courage to live the life you want despite all the voices in your mind telling you why you shouldn’t. It’s about finding your inner bravery to fight for the peace you’re looking for, and fighting the adversary that exists within yourself. You are not alone, and you can reprogram your brain with mindfulness so long as it’s what you want.
