Revere, Massachusetts history dates back to the early 1600’s when the Native American tribe called the Rumney Marsh Indians inhabited much of the area. About one hundred and fifty years later the area played a major role in the Revolutionary War. It was in Revere that the first Navy Battle of the war took place. The area was originally named Rumney Marsh after its first inhabitants and then changed to North Chelsea in 1739. Eventually the city’s name was permanently changed to Revere in honor of the great Revolutionary War patriot, Paul Revere. A little over 50,000 people live and work in Revere today.

Revere brings thousands of tourists every year, theynot only come for the rich history, but Revere has miles and miles of shoreline along the coast, including the oldest public beach in the U.S. The Revere Beach was a popular place for working class families to enjoy a day at the beach, go on amusement park rides and eat at one of the many food stands. The area began to deteriorate in the 1950’s and several honkey-tonk bars took up residence along the shoreline. Most of the former buildings and attractions sat in ruins until the final blow in 1978 when a huge blizzard wreaked havoc and everything left was destroyed including part of the seawall. Thanks to the Massachusetts Department of Recreation, this once famous beach was revitalized and re-opened in 1992 where it continues to attract sun bathers today.
