A bedroom is supposed to be the ultimate sanctuary at the end of your day. It is also the place where there can be an enormous amount of clothes, shoes, books, and accessories than storage space. This means that unless there is a good storage system, things can get cluttered pretty quickly, and the bedroom will lose the serene atmosphere it should have. Here are five ways you can increase storage space in your bedroom.
1. Maximize the use of space under the bed.
The space under your bed can be turned into an amazing storage area. If this is big enough, you can insert several rolling carts to put all kinds of stuff. With a little elbow grease, you can create these convenient under-the-bed containers simply by adding furniture rollers to regular drawers.
If you are desperate for storage space and your bed is too low to accommodate decently sized containers, you might want to think about changing the frame of your bed into a large bunk-type base. This will allow you to put from four to six good-sized drawers, which means there will be room for practically all your shoes and bags.
2. Use the back of doors.
Utilize spaces that are rarely used for storage (or anything else). The back of your bedroom door can hold as many as 20 pairs of footwear, if you use a hanging shoe organizer made of canvas. If your closet is deep enough, the back of your closet door is an ideal place to hang bags that you use often. You can free a lot of closet space by using your closet doors to hang see-through bags for your ties, socks, underwear, and accessories.
3. Make the space behind your bed useful.
The space behind your bed or above your headboard can be put to good use if you install shelves for things that you don’t need constant access to. Just make sure the shelves are stable and able to bear the weight of the items you put in them. Actually, you can even install shelves that extend to the sides of your bed. This is one way to find space for books and personal bric-a-brac that would otherwise clutter the top of your dresser.
4. Use an ottoman storage stool instead of a regular chair.
Instead of the usual chair that goes with most dressers, use an ottoman stool or bench with a lift top. This will create good storage space for blankets, bulky raincoats, or comforters that you don’t need all the time. An ottoman bench also works well at the foot of your bed for extra pillows, towels, and bed linen – items that tend to eat up closet space.
5. Install closets above your windows.
There is usually some empty space between the top of your windows and the ceiling of your bedroom door. You will hit the jackpot by installing a horizontal cabinet in that area. If you choose cabinet doors with attractive trim, these cabinets will give you the added bonus of giving your room an aesthetic lift while keeping various items out of sight.
Even if your bedroom is not large, creating adequate storage space is not an impossible task. However, a neat bedroom with space for everything is not just a matter of adding cabinets and closets. It is essential to use a good deal of organization to make sure everything is stored where it should be. Getting some professional advice about organizing your evening sanctuary would be a very worthwhile investment because then, you will truly be able to say that in your room, everything is perfectly in place.
